Outsourcing your work saves you time and effort. This free time can be spent on more productive activities which will improve your chances of becoming a successful professional blogger and internet marketer.

When I started out in my internet marketing career, I always had to do everything myself, but as I became more successful I realised I needed to outsource some tasks, otherwise I’d be overwhelmed with my day to day tasks and never become an entrepreneur.

5 years later, I’ve had a lot of experience with outsourcing tasks and here is what I learnt.

1. Be very PICKY when you hire!

The fact is there are hundreds if not thousands of people who are suitable to do the job you want. The worst thing you can do is hire the first person that applies in a rush to get the job done.

If you’re thinking, “He seems OK, I’m sure he’ll do fine” you’re probably making the wrong decision and heading towards a car crash.

I have to be 100% satisfied with the candidate; I put a job out for the max duration of the project timeline to get the maximum possible bids so I can find the best possible candidate. Think of this as an investment, you want to hire workers for long term, if you hire a different worker each time you’re doing this completely wrong.

2. Always pay by the hour rather than per project.

Hourly Jobs are Better!

When I first started out I was always worried that it would cost more to pay by the hour rather than per project, thinking that workers would slack and waste time if they’re paid by the hour, unfortunately it didn’t work out that way.

The reason being is that workers are never sure if they’ll be remunerated properly if they get paid per project, they never spent too much attention to detail in one are in case they go over their projected time and end up losing out. So they rush the job, and meet the absolute minimum criteria asked for.

Being paid hourly, it’s in the interest of the worker to not cut corners and work on the project for as long as it needs. The hourly rate never went out of control, and in many instances it was surprisingly less than budgeted. When you pay hourly, you get far better quality than paid on a per project basis.

3. Always monitor your workers, and keep an eye on QC

The second biggest mistake I made was to delegate a project and simply forget about it, this was a really bad move because; 1) the worker missed my instructions and started to derail from the task or 2) started working slower over time.

How did I solve this? Well I always get my workers to use Hyperhour. It’s a small client software that allows me to monitor them whilst they’re working, how much time they’re spending and even see screen caps of their work. So when they bill me for work done, I always know what for.

With the ability of seeing screenshots, there’s no hassle or disagreements, you have an objective proof of work done, and time spent. Plus it saves on time; because the worker doesn’t need to spend time writing up reports to send to you. I was able to log in and see what the worker was doing at any given time and see if they were on task.

It’s always important to monitor, I use Hyperhour because it’s free but there are many tools out there. If you’re successful enough and working on a large scale you may want to hire a manager to monitor the workers for you.

4. Get to know your employees, personally.

Build a relationship with your workers, understand their lifestyle, talk about your families, and build a personal bond. Remember a good worker is worth keeping and makes your job a lot easier because you don’t have to retrain new staff each time. I made a huge blunder, thinking that money was the answer to all problems. People like working for bosses who are personable and nice to work with. It’s easy to not give a damn about someone if you don’t know them.

What’s the point of retraining new staff every month, training them is very tough, and takes up a lot of resources, so you want to pay your workers fairly, and want them to want to work for you for the long term?

I found that single mothers [and even mothers with husbands/boyfriends] tend to be the best workers. Why? well they have a dependant that they need to take care of they’re not thinking about cheating you or jumping onto the career ladder, they’re going from day to day. The only down side with mums is that they’re not always available to work on demand due to have various different mother issues. The worst workers for long term was students, a lot of college students didn’t have the experience, a lot of them were only doing it as a stop gap, and many were inundated with college work to care about project work

5. Finally, treat your employees as team members.

It’s important to make the worker feel part of a team, some may be working for an agency abroad, but many will be working from their computers at home [probably, just like you], it’s easy to feel demotivated when you’re not seeing the fruits of their labour. Always relay feedback to them, give link builders feedback on traffic results, and tell them what a good job they are doing. Remember them on their birthdays or their kids’ birthdays for example. You may run into the strong boss/worker mentality in some cultures like India or Philippines, which can be tough to break away from. But always treat them like they are on an equal footing to you.

Gautam: Andrew, I would like to know about your blogging journey. What inspired you to start blogging? Which was your first blog?

Andrew: For the first 30 years of my career I worked for large corporate companies. The corporate world allowed you to work hard and get well rewarded – which I was. I ended up managing large IT departments.

But I’ve always thought about making it on my own. Over the years I was always looking for something that would make me more money!

I thought that if I worked as hard on my own business as I did in the corporate world – I could make it work.

Then, ‘out of the blue’, someone said to me, why don’t you write a book on Management and sell it on-line?

I started to investigate and quickly got excited. I knew I could write the book due to my experience and I naively believed the hype and thought I’ll make millions on-line by selling the book and retire!

This was 3 years ago.

I found a mentor, online, (I knew nothing about being on-line), and he helped me. He told me exactly what to do, and I invested my earnings from the corporate world into it.

I created a website and a free management guide to start building my own customer list, and then my management book. I did all this in the evenings while staying away from home in the hotels and while traveling in the corporate role.

I finished the sales page and launched, expecting hundreds to sell. I sold about five in the first week, but I was expecting 5,000!

I quickly sucked the mentor dry – he couldn’t help me anymore – I had all his knowledge now, so I found a more experienced mentor, and he helped me in the marketing and we created two more products to sell.

Then I got into blogging and created several blogs and more products.

So now I had a variety of products to sell and my knowledge of making money on-line was growing. I invested thousands of dollars in my education, and it was taking over – I really enjoyed the excitement.

Eighteen months ago, I decided to leave the corporate world and decided to take the plunge and work for myself, full-time.

Since then I have created my own course helping others to build their on-line business.

Gautam: As I can see from your experience, though, you had a great product to sell, you weren’t able to make that much money in the start. Many bloggers and online entrepreneurs think big, but they are not able to reach their expectations. What major mistake do they make?

Andrew: Major mistakes they make include believing all the hype about ‘how easy it is to make money on-line”.

It isn’t easy. It takes hard work, passion and knowledge.

They create products that they THINK will sell rather than do some thorough research and what people want.

They try and do it all themselves. You can’t. Find someone to help you who are better than you and more knowledgeable than you.

Gautam: Andrew, you recently came up with the “The Income Blogging Guide“. Before I ask about the blogging course, I would like to know whether you are generating a good income from blogging?

Andrew: I suppose that depends upon your views of ‘good’!

I generate enough income to live comfortably but it is not just about the money…it’s about the freedom. I love the fact that if it is sunny outside I can choose to go and enjoy the sun – play Tennis or whatever. I work when I want to. Sometimes that might be late at night or 5 am in the morning. That freedom is worth a lot more than a huge amount of income…for me anyway.

Gautam: The best thing I like about your guide is the sales page of your guide. It is simple and crisp with all the information that is required. Could you tell me, who all would benefit from your income blogging guide? What can they expect from blogging guide?

Your Income Blogging Guide is a blogging course, but how do you think it is better than other blogging courses already available in the market?

Andrew: In my experience many of the other course include these types of problems:

They take certain things for granted…like your ability to create a blog or generate traffic. You need to have to be technical savvy in order to follow their “steps”. If you’ve never built a web site before, or have very limited experience, this can be one of the most daunting parts of starting a blog.

Many of the courses say, do this, do that – which is all well and good but our course tells you the ‘how to’ as well.

You may be told to “set up the pages for you to sell your products”. What you are not told is the “how to”. We show you’re the ‘How to’ via videos and screen shots.

Very often you buy the product and then you’re on your own with the information. If you don’t understand a part of it, you can usually submit questions, but there’s not a “go to” resource for figuring out part of the process.

But the problem is that if you don’t concentrate on quality, then you will not able to earn money from it. Quality content builds a reputation which will further help in building a community. Once you build a community, then you can think of making money from it.

Too Many Ads

Too many Ads on your website is a complete no-no for any blog. Too many ads decrease the appeal of a website and they also deteriorate the design. The result is: Readers are unhappy and they have an impression of the blogger as a really greedy person who doesn’t care about his readers. And, instead of making more money, the blog doesn’t make any money!

You would not like this to happen to your blog, right?

So, you should try to have an optimum number of ad spots targeted in a fashion that they really blend well with the design and they don’t become eye sores. Once you have that established, you will be all set to make money from your ads.

No Traffic

You’re wishing that somebody would click on your ad and you will make money. But, that will not happen if you don’t have traffic. Sometimes, bloggers think only of content and forget about marketing it. This is a big mistake on their part. Marketing is really important to get traffic. The number of clicks is dependent on the amount traffic. So, if you get more traffic, then your chances of making money are higher.

Sponsored Reviews

Sponsored Reviews are a great way to make money, but at what cost? Sponsored reviews that are completely off-topic and have no use for your readers can be really harmful for your community. You would be making money on your first oppurtunity, but you will be losing out on your reputation.

It would be far better if you write sponsored reviews on topics related to your niche and add your honest opinion to it. By that technique, you would be writing a sponsored post without hurting your reader’s sentiments.

No Email Newsletter

I was not aware of the power of email newsletters and so do many bloggers. Most internet money makers like Shoemoney and Darren Rowse believe that email newsletter services like Aweber are a must have, if you want to make money from affiliate networks. Chances of conversions increase if you have an email list. Not having an email list will limit the money making potential of your blog.

In Affiliate Marketing, you are promoting somebody else’s product and when somebody buys a product from your affiliate link, you are credited with a commission. The amount of commission you get on each sale depends on the owner of the product. (Usually, the commission also depends on the price. If the price of the product is high, then you can expect the commission will be on the higher side.)

Now, as you’ve understood the importance of affiliate marketing for making money online, you have to search for a good product for your affiliate marketing campaign.

Elegant Themes is an awesome theme club, as you have to pay a meagre 19.95$ per year and you get at  least 5-10 themes each year which is like 4$ per theme – very cheap. And the themes are not low quality, they are worth more than 60$.

5. Coupon Codes

Some products offer coupons to their affiliates and some don’t. Coupon codes boost sales. They are equally effective online as they are offline (You see a lot of coupons for 10-80% off on certain restaurant). They can multiply your sales. You are actually bribing your readers to buy the product from your website. Your readers will readily take this bribe, as they are willing to buy the product.

Coupon Codes can be of two types:

1. General Coupons – General coupons are coupons that are open to all. Anybody can use it, even if they have not been referred by an affiliate. If the cookies are deleted by the referred user, there are chances that you lose on your affiliate commissions.
2. User Defined Coupons – User defined coupons are coupons that can be specified by the affiliate. These coupons will belong to the affiliate. Even if cookies are deleted, you will not lose on your affiliate commissions.

I personally offer “bloggodown” as the coupon code for 9.94$ off on the first bill of Hostgator and it has helped increase my conversions. Michael Dunlop has also seen an increase in his sales due to the addition of user defined coupons.

Obviously user defined coupons are much better than general coupons. Also, an affiliate program that offers coupon code is better than one that doesn’t offer any, right?

6. Recurring vs One Time

Products can be of two types:

1. One Time Sale:

These products are usually ebooks, single themes etc. These products are usually one of those which do not require any support or the support is not part of the whole package. As they are one time sell, the commission is also one time.

2. Recurring Sale:

Products like membership sites, web hosting are the ones that get paid every month or every year. These products include support services required for the user. These Products offer one time or recurring commission (depending on the affiliate program).

BlueHost provides a one time commission, whereas DreamHost provides a recurring commission although both products a recurring sale

It is always good to promote a product which has a lifetime earning potential i.e  has a recurring sale. Even if you are not promoting any new product, you will still be earning a recurring income from it.

7. Tier Affiliate Programs

Tier Affiliate programs are programs that offer commission if another affiliate earned a commission and he signed up for the product from your affiliate link. This means, that even if somebody is promoting a product, you’re a still getting a percentage of the sale. The only thing you have to do is to refer good affiliate marketers to the product and your job is done. You will be making money without any effort.

8. Ramping up commissions

Many product owners reward their best affiliates with either rewards or by increasing their commissions. This is a definite attraction for any affiliate marketer.

Aaron wall’s SEO Book offers 50$ per commission at first and commission per sale increases to 150$ when the number of sales start increasing.

An affiliate program having all these characteristics will be really good, but that is an almost rare possibility. As an affiliate marketer, you should chose a product which has most of these characteristics.

Move #1: Regular, Quality Content

This first move sets the foundation for the other three moves to work. You need to write quality content that is genuinely useful to your niche. You must also do this on a regular, consistent basis.

There is a lot of debate on the “best” posting frequency for your blog. I think it’s not a matter of what “the” best is, but rather, “your” best. What’s do-able for you? Whatever you decide, make sure you’re consistent and you stick with it.

Whether its 3-4 posts per week or per month, keep it that way!

Move #2: Consistent Promotional Efforts

This is another area where there is a lot of debate on what the “best” way to do it is. Once again, I think you need to get into a regular habit of what works for YOU, and just do it on a regular basis.

A simple traffic “tip” is to find blogs in your niche to post comments to on a regular basis. Another technique to build back-links and get even more traffic is to submit short articles to article directories with a link back to your homepage and individual posts (also known as article marketing).

One of my favorite methods of promoting my blog is obvious: guest posting. This involves contacting the owner of a separate blog in your niche and asking if you can submit an article to be published on their blog. If you give them an article of high quality, you have a good chance of being accepted and in-turn, getting even more exposure for your blog.

Move #3: Retaining Your Visitors

This is something that is crucial, but so many bloggers fail to do. If you want to see success anytime soon, you NEED to retain your visitors—which is the act of attracting repeat visitors BACK to your blog.

Repeat traffic is WAY more valuable than your first-time visitors because most people don’t follow through with your intended course of action (such as a purchase) on their very first visit. The problem is, if you don’t make a conscious effort to retain your visitors, most of the people visiting your site will click off and NEVER return (by no fault of your own either).

The best way to retain your visitors is to provide an incentive for your readers to join your mailing list (or subscribe to your feed). You can write a short report (doesn’t matter how long, just make sure it’s useful) and give it away for free in exchange for their subscription. And that takes us to the next and final move…

Move #4: Checkmate (Earning Reader Trust)

Your first step to building trust is writing quality content on a regular basis (see Move #1); however, it goes much further than that. Once you’ve retained your visitors, your focus should be on convincing them to trust you—and for good reason, you’re not going to “con” them in any way.

If you retained your visitors by using a mailing list, then I suggest sending an email every six days. Make two out of three of your emails be a link to a high quality article posted to your blog. Every three to four mailers should be a promotion, such as a product recommendation or a review.

The six-day schedule ensures that you are not annoying your list with too many emails, but you are also not forgotten. When you send two high quality articles to your list before sending a promotion, you are letting them know you are interested in providing them value before you are interested in their wallet.

You can also apply the above strategy if you’re retaining your visitors strictly by RSS subscribers as well. Just follow a similar posting schedule, but make at least 1-2 of your posts per month be a product recommendation or review. Make sure you only recommend high quality products!

Although blogging and chess are two completely different things, there are some significant similarities that can be drawn between the two. They both require a great deal of patience and personal strategy, but if you remain persistent and follow proven techniques such as the “4 Move Checkmate”, success may just be a lot closer than you think.
